Building Athletes’ Confidence in Uniform

Psalm 139:14

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” This verse reminds girls that their body is made by God with intention and beauty.

When a girl enters puberty, she can become self-conscious with her physical appearance when wearing an athletic uniform. Sadly, girls are quitting at a rapid rate the very sports they love to play. They become isolated, depressed, and ashamed. I founded ‘Go Girl’ to effect change, build self-confidence and positive body image through faith. Young female athletes remain in sports and connected to a group of supportive peers who have the Lord on their side!

My Role:

As Founder, Host, and Facilitator, I organize and prepare relevant topics for meetings, facilitate discussions, and host ‘Go Girl’ twice-monthly activities such as Go Girl bracelet-making hangouts and Bible study huddles. In addition, I identify, prep, and host guest speakers to discuss topics that are of timely importance to the girls. I develop content including visualization exercises (inspired by my brother, Owen, who is a Mental Skills Conditioning Facilitator), and deliver them via various social platforms for girls to easily access. I send out an uplifting ‘Go Girl’ Bible Verse of the Day, and I’ve created a feedback system to receive and apply input from participants so that ‘Go Girl’ continually evolves to meet the needs of our athletes.  ‘Go Girl’ is an open, supportive environment where are all welcomed with open arms and attentive ears!

The Net Results:

Building positive body image for young female athletes through faith, one body at a time, builds confidence that allows them to continue playing the sports they love and to feel connected as part of a group of supportive girls who have the Lord on their side.

My Go Girl Journey

Go Girl started with a feeling; one I know many young athletes understand. In middle school, I began feeling uncomfortable in my basketball shorts and softball pants. What used to be just part of the game started to distract me. As my body changed, I became more self-conscious in my uniform, and it affected how I felt about playing the sports I loved. Looking for answers, I began researching and found something alarming: as girls enter puberty, many begin to feel uncomfortable in their athletic uniforms, which can lead to shame, isolation, and sadly, dropping out of sports altogether. I knew I wasn’t alone and I knew something had to change. That’s when Go Girl was born. I founded Go Girl to help young female athletes build confidence and a positive body image through faith. The goal is simple but powerful: to keep girls in the sports they love by creating a supportive community where they feel seen, heard, and strengthened both physically and spiritually.

How It Started and How It’s Growing

GO GIRL started small with just a handful of us sitting around my kitchen table, making bracelets, sharing stories, and talking about the real challenges we face as female athletes. What began as a simple, faith-centered conversation about confidence and discomfort in our uniforms has grown into something much bigger!

On October 21, 2025, after months of planning with our school’s athletic director, I hosted the first-ever GO GIRL forum at Brookwood High School. Ten softball players joined me for an open and honest discussion about how their athletic jerseys impact their confidence and mental health. I led the initiative from concept to coordination including planning, preparing, and facilitating every step. The girls shared powerful insights about body image, self-esteem, and the pressure to perform in uniforms that don’t always make them feel comfortable or confident.

I’m excited to share that GO GIRL continues to grow. On February 11, 2026, I hosted our third GO GIRL forum with the girls’ varsity basketball team. During this session, I incorporated my AP Research project, asking intentional questions about confidence, pressure, uniforms, and team culture. Participants completed a custom survey I designed, and their honest responses are now shaping my thesis on how sports uniforms affect adolescent girls’ mental health!

What makes GO GIRL different is that we don’t stop at conversation. Together, we create action plans such as identifying specific uniform concerns, proposing thoughtful adjustments, and collaborating with coaches and administrators to help ensure girls feel comfortable, confident, and focused when they compete. Our mission is not only to help girls feel good about themselves, but to effect meaningful, lasting change in athletic environments!

As founder, I’m pleased with GO GIRL’s progress. From kitchen table conversations to schoolwide forums, research-backed solutions, and real improvements on the field, GO GIRL is becoming a movement where female athletes are empowered to speak up, support one another, and stay in the sports they love with confidence and faith!

GO GIRL is rapidly expanding. Three more forums are already planned: I’ve been asked to lead a session as part of our school’s monthly Girl Talk gathering in April, to host a fourth GO GIRL forum with our soccer players, and I’ve been invited by Fellowship of Christian Athletes to facilitate a special GO GIRL session with more than 150 female athletes expected to attend their Spring Huddle! Each new opportunity allows us to reach more girls with the message that they are not alone: they were made to play bold, live confident, and walk in faith!

If you’re interested in bringing GO GIRL to your team or event, I would love to connect, you are always welcome to join us!

Go Girl effecting Change one Button at a Time…

During our May meeting, Go Girl participants, who play softball, expressed their discomfort with the uniform tops we wear. They shared that because there are only three buttons on the top, when they throw the ball, the top opens and shows their bra which makes them uncomfortable and distracts them on the field of play. Go Girl took action! We approached our coach, explained the issue, and Coach agreed to have a fourth button added to our tops to make us feel more comfortable and focus on the game! Go Girl is effecting change one button at a time!

What We Do

Go Girl is a collaborative, faith-based community that brings together female athletes, mentors, coaches, and experts to create a space where every girl feels seen, heard, and supported. While I’m proud to have founded Go Girl, I’ve learned that the most meaningful growth happens when we build together and that includes leadership voices, trusted advisors, and most importantly, the girls themselves.

Here’s how we’re growing Go Girl as a team:

Go Girl is an open and inclusive community where every girl has a voice, every story matters, and everyone plays a role in helping each other stay confident, stay connected, and stay in the game.

Why It Matters

Go Girl is more than a program it’s a movement built on faith, research, real conversations, and community. Together with female athletes, coaches, leaders, and experts, we’re creating a space where every girl feels seen, supported, and strong, both on and off the field. Through open forums, faith-based encouragement, expert insights, and genuine connection, Go Girl empowers girls to build confidence, embrace their bodies, and stay connected to the sports they love. Here, no one’s journey is overlooked every voice matters, and everyone plays a role in lifting each other up. We warmly welcome all female athletes to join us with open arms. Whether you’re looking for support, a safe place to share, or a community to grow your faith and confidence, Go Girl is here for you. You are never alone and the Lord is always on your side. If you’re interested in learning more or joining the Go Girl community, please reach out! We’d love to hear from you, answer your questions, and help you find your place with us. Together, we’re building confidence, strengthening faith, and changing the game: one girl at a time!
